PRIMARY WELFARE OFFICER
Hello, and welcome to the Wellbeing link of Wonthaggi North Primary School.
My name is Susan Gillies, and I have the privilege of working with all
students and families at our school. My role is guided by principles
established by the Department of Education and Training as part of the
Blueprint for Government Schools, but to me it is much more than that!
The Primary Welfare Initiative
The role of the Primary Welfare Officer is to be an
active member of the
school’s student wellbeing team, and support schools in the
implementation
of the Framework for Student Support Services in Victorian Government
Schools. Primary Welfare Officers support schools to strengthen a
whole school approach to the wellbeing of students. They are guided by the
framework to implement practices which reduce risk factors within the school
context and to promote protective factors by strengthening learning
relationships in a supportive, healthy environment. The
Initiative complements and extends existing programs that enhance student
engagement, retention, academic achievement and the acquisition of life
skills.
What this looks like at WNPS
I see myself as a link in a very strong chain, which joins students,
families, school and our community together. Please don’t be alarmed by the
word ‘welfare’, it has a certain understanding that for many, can be
negative. In my case, this word means ‘health and wellbeing’ – how are you
travelling? And, is everything OK so you can get on with the job of growing
and learning. The journey through schools is a challenge for all students,
and together with families we learn from each other. Sometimes there is a
need for extra support, whether that be for agencies such as speech
pathology, occupational therapy, psychologists or social workers, or simply
for a listening ear and a box of tissues! This support extends to families,
not just individuals as we are all part of the team that drives this school.
At Wonthaggi North Primary our staff works hard to provide the best
opportunities for your children. We appreciate all you do for your family
and part of my role is to support you in the valuable job you do. I support
our students through programs such as Reading Intervention, Social
Development Groups, Peer Mediation, counselling and referral to supporting
services outside the main scope of our school. I work closely with our
Principal, Paula Cross, and with the teachers who plan for and work with
your children.
If you have concerns, or want to share issues that will help us to improve
the health and wellbeing your children, please feel free to contact me at
school at any time.
I look forward to working with you.
